This page shows you the courses and examinations you need to take to gain the ITIL Expert Certificate.

Also, the ITIL Expert Certificate can still be gained by those who already hold an ITIL (V2) Managers Certificate without the need to follow the formal ITIL V3 Expert Route. However, since 30 June 2011, the Managers Bridge qualification has been withdrawn and the only route possible is described here.

Management Summary

Assuming you are new to ITIL V3 qualifications, gaining ITIL Expert Certificate will require:

Explanation 

Native V3 Route
ITIL V3 qualifications use a credit system: Each course passed gains you credits.
 
To gain the ITIL V3 Expert Certificate requires 22 credits to be gained:
 
Step 1  ITIL V3 Foundation - 3 days  gaining 2 credits from 1 hour exam.
Step 2  ITIL V3 Intermediate courses - a set of 10 courses to pick from (see here): minimum days is (5 x 3 days) + (1 x 5 days) gaining 20 credits from 6 courses and 9.5 hours of exams
(Each course includes a 90 minute multichoice exam (except MALC which is 120 minutes) to gain the certificate and the credits for that course)


Total of 23 days training if you go via Native V3 Route. Requires you to sit 10.5 hours of exams!

ITIL V2 Service Manager Route
Only available to those holding an ITIL V2 Service Manager Certificate (i.e. passed both Service Support and Service Delivery examinations).

Step 1  ITIL V3 Foundation - 3 days incl. 60 minute exam (can just sit exam online without attending a course)
Step 2  ITIL V3 Intermediate Service Strategy or Continual Service Improvement - 3 days incl. 90 minute exam (must participate in a course in order to sit exam)

Step 3  ITIL V3 Intermediate Managing Across the Lifecycle (MALC) - 5 days incl. 120 minute exam (must participate in a course in order to sit exam)

Total of 11 classroom training days. Requires you to sit 4.5 hours of exams   NB: The credit system does not apply to this route

NB: Only ITIL V3 Foundation Exams can be sat without attending a course. Attendance at an accredited training course is mandatory in order to sit exams for all other ITIL certificates
