ITIL for those who don't have the time

(Jan5)  That's what Adventnet claim about their ITIL Heroes Handbook created by Alex D. Paul.  It is a serious publication, however, targeted at implementing ITIL V2 Service Support. It uses around a dozen cartoon strips to illustrate the basic principles of ITIL  over 42 pages and does an excellent job.  The artwork is of Marvel comic quality and made us laugh.  It is freely downloadable but basic registration is required. (Jul 15)  Feedback on the 1 day ITIL V3 Foundation Bridge Course has been that it is too much to cover in 1 day including the 30 minute exam.  We always recommend our clients to take the 3 day ITIL V3 Foundation if they are able to. Now Pink Elephant UK , following its N American arm's lead, has bitten the bullet and plans to withdraw the 1 day Foundation Bridge after Aug 29 2008.  We expect others to follow suit as the ITIL V3 training curriculum ramps up to completion by Jan 2009.  Further, ISEB has provisionally decided that V2 ITIL Managers exams will not be scheduled after April 2009, unless there is sufficient demand.

(Mar 27) The University of Northampton in the UK claims to be the first university in the world to run a postgraduate Master of Science (MSc) course in IT Service Management.  The course started in Oct 2005 and the first award ceremony was in Feb 2008.The course has a substantial ITIL component and runs on a 1 year (full time) or 2 years (part time) basis.

Now, Charles Sturt University in Australia has announced that in partnership with the EXIN examination board it will incorporate EXIN-accredited ITIL training and examinations into its IT-related undergraduate and postgraduate exams. It is claimed that this is the first university course where passing ITIL exams is essential for students to graduate. For the 2 Masters degrees, students will have to pass ITIL V2 Foundation, ITIL Managers (V2) plus ITIL V2-V3 Bridging before graduating.

Once again itSMF UK has come up with a little gem. They manage to explain all of ITIL V3 in 55 pages. Ideal for today's short attention span! It's free to download and printed copies can be ordered from itSMF at delivery cost only. Oh, and by the way, Table 1 on p.41 says there are 26 processes, one less than in The Official Introduction.

Sharon Taylor, The Chief Examiner ITIL V3 has published (Nov 2007) a 31 page document titled "ITIL Service Management Practices - V3 Qualification Scheme". This is version 3.0 of the scheme and covers all of the exams at Foundation and Intermediate Levels with an outline of the Advanced Level.  Both Native V3 and V2-V3 Bridging are included showing the credits awarded and  course durations (in hours). V2-V3 Bridging has been clarified and those with substantial numbers of V2 Practitioner qualifications can now bridge too, although it is a challenging option.

What's new in ITIL Version 3?  What's different to ITIL V2? New processes, new qualifications. 27 Powerpoint slides. Revised to include recent qualification changes and to include new non-OGC books on ITIL V3.

Now in Brazilian Portugese, European Spanish, French, German and Japanese as well as English.  Soon available in Spanish (Latin America), Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Hindi or Urdu. Link is to the official ITIL site.

Eagerly awaited by those with ITIL V2 Managers Certificates. It's a 4-day course with a 90 minute exam of 20 multi-choice, scenario-based questions that leads to the ITIL Diploma (referred to as "ITIL Expert level" while a new internationally acceptable name is found.). Courses expected available: start of 2008.

The Official Introduction to the ITIL Service Lifecycle book was published on 31st August 2007. Details

The official syllabus has been published by APMG (6 August) for this 1 day bridge course for those who already hold  the ITIL Foundation Certificate.  A 20 question multiple choice exam at the end of the course gains you the ITIL V3 Foundation Certificate if you score 65%. Details.
